Everton boss David Moyes says he is delighted with Phil Jagielka’s call-up to the England squad in place of the injured Gareth Barry.
Originally on the standby list for Roy Hodgson’s 23-man squad for Euro 2012, a groin injury to Barry has paved the way for Jagielka to get his chance in Poland and Ukraine.
Moyes was thrilled for his versatile centre back and believes his call-up is just reward for his hard work.
“I am really pleased for Jags. I said earlier I was disappointed he was only on the standby list because I thought he would bring something different,” the Everton boss said.
“I think the way he performed in the second half of last season merited a call-up to the original squad, so I’m delighted he’s in there at last.”
Moyes feels England is a more balanced team when Jagielka is on the pitch and he is looking forward to seeing what kind of impact the 29-year-old can have.
“When I look at some of England’s best displays, they have all come when Jags has been involved,” he said.
“He most certainly deserves to be in and around international company and it’s great for him that he can now look forward to the Euros.
“When I had him and Joleon (Lescott) at Everton I felt I had the next England centre-back partnership on my hands — and I still see them as such.”
