English League Cup rebranded

The English League Cup is to be named after financial services company Capital One in a new sponsorship deal with the Football Association.

The competition, founded in 1960, has been sponsored by various companies, including Coca-Cola, Worthington’s and Carling.

The Football League’s chief commercial officer Richard Heaselgrave hailed the new four-year naming deal for the tournament, which had been known as the Carling Cup since 2003.

“This is terrific news for clubs and a great way to conclude the season,” Heaselgrave said.

“The Capital One Cup is in great shape, having been re-invigorated in recent seasons by a number of memorable finals, some thrilling midweek cup football and a first glimpse of the stars of the future.”

The competition, considered less prestigious than the older FA Cup, is often used by English Premier League heavyweights as an opportunity to field inexperienced and fringe players.

Liverpool defeated Championship side Cardiff City in a penalty shootout at Wembley Stadium to win the 2011/12 tournament in February.

It was a record eighth victory in the competition for Liverpool, with five-time winners Aston Villa the second most successful League Cup team.

Neviile keen to remove fear factor World Soccer Shop

England coach Gary Neville wants to get rid of the fear factor surrounding the Three Lions.

Nevile: Wants England to play with freedom

It has been an unusual few days around the Three Lions camp, with Gareth Barry and Frank Lampard ruled out of Euro 2012 before their disappointment was put into sharp perspective by a talk from a survivor of the Auschwitz concentration camp, which members of Roy Hodgson's squad will visit when they arrive in Poland next week.

Now minds have to focus on tomorrow's final friendly with Belgium at Wembley, the last chance Hodgson will have to see his players in a meaningful game before their Euro 2012 opener with France in Donetsk on June 11.

And another chance for Neville to impress upon the players he is working with as a member of Hodgson's backroom team that starring for England should be fun.

"I want to give them an appetite to be free and have expression," said Neville.

"This is a great moment for them.

"Many have said it before. There has been a fear about it when players have played for England. We have to remove it."

Time is limited though, largely thanks to Hodgson's "brave" decision to give players that - apart from skipper Steven Gerrard and Liverpool team-mate Glen Johnson - he has no knowledge of a lengthy post-season break.

"No manager has ever given his players 10 days off," said Neville.

"But Roy has respected the fact they need a break.

"He is really brave but it is something that needed to happen. We have tried everything else."

With midfield resources so badly weakened, one of the players who may now come into contention is 18-year-old Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who made a decent international debut in Oslo.

Neville was impressed when he saw the teenager in action for Arsenal in their Champions League encounter with AC Milan earlier in the year.

"The opportunity is there for him," said the former Manchester United full-back.

"It is about grabbing that moment. He was outstanding against AC Milan and he showed good glimpses of his skill on Saturday when he came on."

With Glen Johnson and Danny Welbeck unlikely to be involved, Hodgson will at least look to provide his three remaining Chelsea players with some game-time against Belgium, with star man Wayne Rooney also set to play some part, even though he is suspended for England's opening two group matches.

That is one of the reasons why there is so much pessimism around England at the moment, something which has not escaped Neville's attention.

"There seems to be the lowest expectation I have ever known going into a tournament for an England team," he said.

"The fact of the matter is that in tournaments past it has been fine lines.

"We are talking about losing matches against Argentina, Portugal and Germany.

"We are not exactly getting knocked out by mug nations."

Neville: Hart key to England chances

England coach Gary Neville believes goalkeeper Joe Hart will play a huge role in determining his side’s success at Euro 2012.

Hart cemented himself as England’s first choice during qualifying for the tournament and has enjoyed a successful season for Manchester City, appearing in every league game as his side won their first Premier League title.

And former Manchester United captain Neville praised the young custodian, insisting he could prove the difference between success and failure should his side take part in a penalty shoot-out in Poland and Ukraine.

“I have been explaining this to some of the lads over the last few days – I went to five tournaments and in four of them we went out on penalties,” Neville told the Daily Mail.

“I’m not being disrespectful to the goalkeepers who I played with, but we have a great goalkeeper now and that may be the difference.”

Despite highlighting England’s penalty record the former Manchester United defender stopped short of using spot-kicks as an excuse for England’s past failures.

“That’s not been the real reason. At the 1998 World Cup, France and Brazil were better than us,” he added.

“I have analysed it. If you want it in one sentence, we haven’t been good enough.”

Blanc hopeful on M´Vila fitness

France coach Laurent Blanc is hopeful that Yann M’Vila will recover from his ankle problem in time for Euro 2012.

Les Bleus’ 2-0 friendly victory against Serbia on Thursday was disrupted by M’Vila’s injury in the opening minutes of the game, which looked serious after the Rennes midfielder limped out in distress.

France national team doctor Fabrice Bryand said after the match that he will need 48 hours to reassess the injury before determining M’Vila’s recovery time.

Blanc is upbeat about the player’s chances of featuring in the country’s opening game at Euro 2012 against England.

“We think that he will be available for the first match of the Euros,” he told reporters.

Turning his attention to the win over Serbia, Blanc was satisfied with his men’s display, but noted there are many things that the team must improve on before the start of the tournament.

“We strive for perfection, but there is no such thing,” he said. “We showed a better physical freshness than we did against Iceland, but we are not yet ready.

“We were a bit disappointing in the last 15 minutes, but overall I am pretty happy with our display.”

France kick off their Euro campaign against England on June 11 before taking on Ukraine and Sweden.

Pulis eager to keep Huth

Stoke City manager Tony Pulis insists the club will not sell Robert Huth in the off-season.

The 27-year old German signed for Stoke from Middlesbrough in August 2009 and has been a fixture in the club’s back-line, making 101 appearances.

Uncertainty now surrounds Huth’s future with just a year remaining on his four-year contract.

The former Chelsea man is yet to sign a new deal and Pulis is desperate for Huth to stay, ruling out any potential sale.

Pulis told the Daily Mail: “We are desperately keen to sort out Robert’s future.”

“We have been talking to him for some time but whatever happens, he won’t be sold.”

Pulis has turned Stoke into an established Premier League outfit and will prepare them for their fifth straight top-flight campaign.

The Britannia boss hopes to resolve Huth’s future before the start of the season and believes that he is a favourite among the clubs fans.

“I’m hopeful something will be sorted by the time we come back for pre-season training in July,” Pulis said.

“He’s obviously a player who is valued and the supporters have taken to him because of the way he approaches the game.”

Diego resigned to Wolfsburg return

Atletico Madrid loanee Diego believes that he will play his football at Wolfsburg next season.

The 27-year-old was shipped out to the Vicente Calderon on loan by the German outfit last term after falling out with coach Felix Magath just one year after arriving at the Bundesliga club from Juventus.

He enjoyed an impressive 2011/12 campaign with Atletico, helping Diego Simeone’s side win the Europa League and finish fifth in La Liga.

Despite recently admitting that he would like to join Atletico on a permanent basis, Diego looks resigned to return to the Volkswagen Arena.

“I think that I will be at Wolfsburg next season again,” he told Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung.

“I still have two years on my contract.”

The Brazilian playmaker, who cost Wolfsburg 15.5 million euros, scored six goals in 42 competitive appearances for Atletico.

Villa shows faith in Spain depth

Barcelona striker David Villa has played down his absence from the Spain national team at Euro 2012.

The 30-year-old striker ruled himself out of selection for the finals in Poland and Ukraine as he is still nursing a fractured tibia sustained at the Club World Cup in December.

His unavailability has been described by Spain coach Vicente del Bosque as a heavy blow, but Villa thinks that Spain have other quality attacking options available.

“One is always happy that people regret their absence, but Spain will not miss me,” he told reporters.

“There are great goal-poachers on the team and any player can score. I have a great affection for Fernando Torres and I think he is in great form after what he undeservedly went through.”

Villa, who visited Spain’s training base on Thursday, explained how he told Del Bosque that he would not be able to make the squad for Euro 2012.

“I worked until the end and they waited until the last moment to see how my recovery was going,” he said.

“But when there were a few days left for the announcement of the squad, I told him [Del Bosque] that I was not at a level good enough to compete, that I was not in the shape for the national team, and that I would not be at my best.

“I was true to myself, Barcelona and Spain.”

Questioned about Spain’s chances in Poland and Ukraine, Villa said: “We have won the right to be called favourites after four years filled with success.

“But when the tournament starts, every team will have the same chances.”

Spain begin the defence of their European crown against Italy in Group C on June 10.

M'Vila injured in France win World Soccer Shop

A potentially serious injury to key midfielder Yann M'Vila took the shine off an otherwise encouraging 2-0 victory for France over Serbia.

M'Villa: Hobbles out of France's clash with Serbia

Rennes midfielder M'Vila took a kick to the ankle from Dusan Tadic in the opening exchanges and although he tried to carry on he left the pitch in obvious distress with just four minutes on the clock.

His team-mates went on to win with ease, scoring early goals through Franck Ribery and Florent Malouda while creating several other chances, but it will be the diagnosis for his central lynchpin that will most concern Laurent Blanc with less than two weeks until the start of their Euro 2012 campaign.

Germany continue to search for their form nine days ahead of their Euro 2012 bow against Portugal after stumbling to a 2-0 friendly win over Israel in Leipzig.

Against the nation ranked 58 in the world by FIFA, Mario Gomez gave Joachim Low's side the lead just before the break.

A late goal from Andre Schurrle earned Germany a slightly more respectable margin of victory but, after losing 5-3 to Switzerland last weekend, Low still has a lot of fine-tuning to do before things get serious on June 9.

Kiriakos Papadopoulos scored the only goal in the 24th minute as Greece completed preparations for the European Championship finals by claiming their first win in five games against Armenia.

Fernando Santos' side faced going to the finals in disarray after failing to win in any of their four previous friendlies, including a disappointing 1-1 draw against Slovenia in Kufstein last Saturday.

The early strike from Papadopoulos will have restored confidence in the Greek side, who begin their finals campaign against hosts Poland in the opening match next Friday.

Bierhoff pleased with Germany progress

German team manager Oliver Bierhoff was happy with his side’s final preparations for Euro 2012 after a 2-0 win over Israel on Thursday.

Mindful of sides that may set up with a similar defensive approach at the tournament, a full-strength Germany showed patience to break through with goals from Mario Gomez and Andre Schurrle.

“I thought that the second half was good, we held the pace high, had good plays and found better ways to attack,” Bierhoff said.

“For example the second goal by Andre Schrrle, I thought Thomas Muller did wonderfully there. We showed at the end how to get through a solid defence like that.

“The Isrealis didn’t make it easy for us, they positioned themselves deep in their own half and we know that at the Euros you may have to play against a team which plays like that.”

Bierhoff could not resist taking a shot at Chelsea after their Champions League triumph over Bayern Munich.

“It was good preparation, maybe the school of Chelsea becomes more popular because of their success,” the ex-German international said, referring to the west London side’s defence-minded approach.

“So we have to expect that many teams will play defensively-minded against us.”

Attacking midfielder Toni Kroos, almost a certainty to line up against Germany’s first Group B opponents, Portugal, was pleased with the amount of chances his side created.

“In the second half we should have scored a few more goals, which also means that we created a lot of good chances,” Kroos said.

“We have to work on that. We have to use the chances and when we do that, I think we are in with a really good chance of winning.”

No WAGs allowed, warns Neville World Soccer Shop

England coach Gary Neville has vowed that there will never be any repeat of the WAGs debacle at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

Cheryl Cole: Proved an off-field distraction in 2006

As with this summer, six years ago, England opted to base themselves in an accessible location for a major tournament, the rather genteel spa resort of Baden Baden, close to the Black Forest.

However, England's presence was completely overshadowed by that of their glamorous wives and girlfriends, who became a magnet for photographers and a massive distraction.

Poland's second city Krakow may not hold the same appeal and, a combination of the logistical difficulties of getting to matches taking place in Ukraine - a two-hour flight away - and the potential for racism has led some families to make a decision to stay away altogether.

Whether the lure of Brazil in 2014 raises the WAGs issue once more is open to debate.

Neville, part of that England squad in Germany which bowed out to Portugal in a quarter-final penalty shoot-out, is confident those chaotic scenes are a thing of the past.

"That won't happen again," he said. "The FA learned from the experience in 2006. The England team did. The England players did.

"That wasn't ideal for anybody.

"It was symptomatic of the times. Between 2002 and 2007 everyone got carried away with everything in life.

"It is a different world now and those mistakes won't happen again under any manager or any regime. The platform won't be given.

"We are managing it this time in a completely different way. We are here to play football. We are here to work."

England's response to Baden Baden was to shut their players away in the relative isolation of Rustenburg in South Africa.

That did not work either, with many players complaining of boredom.

So, when they leave England on June 6, they will do so for the centre of a city with approximately 750,000 inhabitants.

Yet, according to Neville, this is the only way to replicate the normal day-to-day experiences of the England squad, and get the best out of them.

"Players would not pen themselves into a countryside location between a Saturday and Tuesday game for their clubs," he said.

"That is the big message, to have players doing what they would normally do.

"You can never replicate the home environment but in terms of being free to go for a coffee or to the shops - we should embrace it, even though it has never been done before."

Though he went to five major tournaments as a player during an 85-cap England career he regards as "a waste of time" in the sense of never winning anything, this will be Neville's first as a coach.

It represents a giant leap of faith from manager Roy Hodgson, who knows the 37-year-old has no relevant coaching experience.

Hodgson was attracted to Neville, though, because of his astute observations in his role as a TV pundit on Sky.

Yet, during that time, the former Manchester United full-back has made many forceful comments about most of the 23-man squad he is now trying to get the most from.

"I don't think the players are too fragile," said Neville. "Yes, at some point I will have highlighted a mistake from every player in this squad, or praised them.

"But football players are very honest.

"If someone makes a mistake in a big game millions around the world will have seen it, plus their own coaches, own fans, family, themselves.

"The last thing they will be worried about is me sat in a little glass box saying something.

"A lot more questions were being asked about me and my role at Sky 12 months ago.

"I had been at United for 20 years and I was still an ambassador. How was I ever going to talk openly and honestly about Manchester United's players and their opponents?

"I would like to think I have proved I am impartial and can speak openly.

"As long as you are fair and honest across the board I don't think anyone has a problem, although the real proof will come next season.

"That is when I have to prove I can handle both of these roles.

"But I am not worried about it at all."

Pescara president confirms Zeman move to Roma

Pescara president Daniele Sebastiani has revealed that head coach Zdenek Zeman will leave the club to take charge of Roma.

The capital club are in the market for a new coach due to the departure of Luis Enrique, and they have now found a replacement in the 65-year-old for the 2012-13 campaign.

“Zeman is going to Roma. Everything has been decided. Roma’s call was too strong for him to turn down,” Sebastiani told Radio Mana Mana.

“We will always have a good relationship with him. Zdenek has very close ties to the city, and will always be in Pescara’s heart.

“We could not keep him here. He has a lot of affection for Rome, and for Roma in particular. His choice was inevitable.”

Zeman guided Pescara back to Serie A this season after a 19-year absence from Italy’s top flight.

Roma have yet to confirm the appointment of Zeman, but are expected to release an official statement in the next few days.

Reds agree fee for Rodgers & co World Soccer Shop

Liverpool have reportedly agreed a compensation fee with Swansea for Brendan Rodgers and three of his backroom staff.

Rodgers: Compensation fee agreed between Liverpool and Swansea

The Anfield outfit now look to have removed the final obstacle in their search for a new boss with confirmation of Rodgers' appointment on a three-year deal expected to follow.

The Northern Irishman emerged as the leading candidate for the Merseyside vacancy in recent days after initially rejecting the opportunity to discuss the post.

Kenny Dalglish was sacked by the club's American owners, Fenway Sports Group, just over two weeks ago after overseeing a mixed season for the club.

Liverpool added silverware to their trophy cabinet in the shape of the Carling Cup and also reached the FA Cup final, but a dismal performance in the Premier League, where they finished in eighth and 37 points adrift of champions Manchester City, led to Dalglish's departure.

Rodgers has earned widespread plaudits for the style of play he has introduced with Swansea, having been appointed at the Liberty Stadium in July 2010.

The former Watford and Reading boss guided the Swans into the top-flight via the Championship play-offs and then established the Welsh club in the top-flight with an attractive brand of football.

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez had also held talks with Reds owner John W Henry before being usurped in the race for the hot-seat by his Premier League rival.

Kjaer to cut Wolfsburg ties

Roma’s Simon Kjaer has stressed that he has no intention of returning to Wolfsburg this off-season once his loan spell in Italy ends.

The Denmark international joined the Serie A side on a one-year loan deal at the start of the 2011-12 campaign after a difficult time with the Bundesliga outfit, and he has insisted that he does not want to work with coach Felix Magath again.

“I am not going to call Mr. Magath. I will never player under Magath again,” Kjaer told Kicker.

“At the moment, I am concentrating on the European Championship and then we will see. It goes without saying, though, that I will not be returning to Wolfsburg.”

The 23-year-old has a contract with the Wolfsburg until the end of the 2013-14 season, but it seems unlikely that he will see out that agreement following his latest comments.

Diego talks up Wolfsburg return

Brazilian midfielder Diego has confessed that he expects to play for Wolfsburg next season.

The highly rated playmaker left the German side for Atletico Madrid after clashing with coach Felix Magath last summer, and signed a loan agreement with los Colchoneros.

The Brazilian managed to kick-start his career at Vicente Calderon and had a big role to play on the road to the Europa League title, but it appears that the La Liga outfit won’t be able to make his transfer permanent.

The player now admits that a summer return to Wolfsburg is the most likely scenario.

“I think I will be at Wolfsburg next season,” Diego told Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung. “I still have two years of contract.”

The 27-year-old was purchased by the Wolves in 2010 following an unsuccessful spell at Juventus and he enjoyed a great first season at Volkswagen Arena.

Nonetheless, the Brazilian was allowed to leave the club last summer following a row with head coach Felix Magath.

The experienced coach recently revealed that he would be happy to welcome the Brazilian back to the side.

Chevrolet drive deal with United World Soccer Shop

Manchester United have confirmed a five-year partnership with US car giant Chevrolet to become the club's official automotive partner.

United: Five-year partnership with Chevrolet

Club officials flew into Shanghai on Wednesday and will unveil the deal later on Thursday.

Although no figure is being placed on the partnership it is believed United have secured a significant increase on their previous deal with Audi, which has now expired.

Despite losing their status as Premier League champions Manchester City and missing out on the signing of Belgian playmaker Eden Hazard, United believe they remain at the forefront of the world game.

And, after announcing earlier this week that they had 659 million fans worldwide, they are keen to maintain their commercial power, especially as media revenues will be affected in the Champions League.

This season United were knocked out in the group stages for only the second time, whilst next season, their percentage of the English 'pot' will be reduced due to a combination of City's title win and Chelsea's Champions League success.

"With 659 million United fans and followers around the world, the commitment that Chevrolet is making to football and its plans to bring these fans closer to our club is very exciting for us," said United commercial director Richard Arnold. "This is also the first time we have teamed up with a US automotive partner and with the growing popularity of the club and English football in America, we are hoping the relationship will allow us to further expand our fan base in the country."

Green seeks talks with SFA World Soccer Shop

Charles Green wants to prevent the dispute between Rangers and the Scottish Football Association spiralling out of control.

Green: Wants talks with Regan

The Ibrox club won their court battle against an SFA transfer embargo after a judge ruled the disciplinary panel members acted outside of their powers.

Lord Glennie proposed that the case go back to the SFA appeal tribunal that upheld the initial decision by a judicial panel to impose a 12-month ban on registering players aged 18 and over as punishment for a failure to pay more than £13million in tax last season.

There is now talk of FIFA intervening but Green, the man fronting the consortium who are trying to take Rangers out of administration, told the Scottish Sun: "I want to have talks with (SFA chief executive) Stewart Regan to find a way out of this for the good of Scottish football.

"There is a balancing act here. We accept Rangers should be punished for the sins of the past. I am not disputing that, the SFA have an obligation to do that.

"But I have to stress that the fans of Rangers, administrators and myself feel the initial penalty given to the club was too harsh.

"Now there has to be a solution and a way out that doesn't cause carnage for the game in Scotland.

"There has been talk that if the SFA appeal to Lord Carloway, who rubber-stamped the original decision, then Rangers could be booted out of football for 12 months - or even for good.

"If everyone steps back from the understandable emotions of this for a second I can't believe anyone who loves the game in Scotland wants that.

"I want to speak with Stewart Regan to try and find the right path for Rangers and the game as a whole in this country."

Jim Boyce, vice-president of FIFA, told the Daily Record: "Neither FIFA nor UEFA like any clubs of their member associations becoming involved in legal action.

"If any club is not happy with its governing body they should seek to settle their dispute through the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

"The matter has not yet been reported to FIFA by the SFA but I expect they will keep each other informed.

"If the SFA are not happy with the situation I expect them to write to UEFA and FIFA within the next three days.

"This matter has to be resolved. It cannot go on."

Barca continue Alba chase

Valencia are resigned to losing Jordi Alba as Barcelona continue to chase the impressive left back, according to reports.

Despite initially being determined to hold onto the 23-year-old, Valencia have now supposedly accepted the player’s departure is inevitable.

Valencia sporting director Braulio Vazquez said he was aware Barcelona were eager to sign Alba.

“I suppose Barcelona want him because he’s Catalan and plays on the left wing,” he told Radio Galega.

“We are obviously talking about an excellent player, and it’s only normal that Barcelona are keen to sign him.”

Alba has a contract with Mauricio Pellegrino’s side until 2013, but they are ready to see him leave for a fee in the region of 15 million euros.

Barca have reportedly already agreed personal terms with the defender, but are yet to table an official offer.

Given, who was told to rest a knee injury following a visit to a London specialist last week, was back on the training ground at Borgo A Buggiano on Thursday morning, as was O'Shea, whose ankle problem has been a concern since before he joined up.

The players, who were given a day off on Wednesday, were in high spirits as they went through their paces in bright sunshine at the Stadio Comunale Alberto Benedetti.

They are due to leave their Montecatini base at the weekend for Budapest, where they will play their final warm-up game against Hungary on Monday.

Norwich boss Paul Lambert holding talks with Aston Villa

Norwich boss Paul Lambert’s agents are in talks with Premier League rivals Aston Villa about the Scot becoming the next Villa boss.

Villa have been linked with numerous candidates since Alex McLeish’s departure from Villa Park earlier this month.

Candidates

Villa offered Wigan boss Roberto Martinez the position last summer, only for the Spaniard to turn them down in favour of staying at Wigan.

The 38 year-old has also turned down the chance to move to Liverpool this summer. Wigan owner Dave Whelan has stated that he is staying with the Latic’s.

Molde boss and former-Manchester striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also held talks with the Midlands club but decided to stay in Norway. The Norwegian made an impressive start to his managerial career guiding Molde to their first ever league championship in his first season as a boss.

Disagreement

Its been reported that Norwich boss Paul Lambert had some sort of disagreement with the Norwich board on Wednesday night, which could speed up his departure from Carrow Road. Lambert has previously stated that he is happy at Norwich but it now seems that he could be on the move.

Rise

Paul Lamberts reputation as a manager has been increased by his club achieving consecutive promotions and holding their own in the Premier League. Lambert is a highly-rated boss and is also highly-respected in coaching circles within the game.

Lambert has been compared to former-Villa boss Martin O’Neill in the past, because of his image and his passion on the touchline. Also because he has had a similar managerial career path to the Ulsterman.

Needed

Paul Lambert is the sort of bright young boss that is desperately needed at Villa Park. The club has been in a slump in recent seasons, mostly due to selling their best players. Villa are in need of some fresh impetus and ideas.

Lambert is just the sort of young manager who can provide them with it. He will bring the sort of fresh approach needed at the club.

Hard

The Villa hotseat is a really difficult one to be in at the moment. Villa owner Randy Lerner doesn’t seem to want to spend anymore money on the club. Although his approach could change with the appointment of a new manager.

If it doesn’t then the new manager, whether it is Lambert or somebody else will be doing their job with one hand tied behind his back. The Villa squad is in desperate need of strengthening with the club having to rely on youngster for a lot of last season.

Villa finished the season just three points above the relegation zone and Alex McLeish paid the price for that disappointment. The truth is though the players at the club are no longer good enough.

Big

Although Norwich finished higher in the Premier League than Aston Villa last season the Villans are still a far bigger club.

Their history, tradition and trophies outweigh that of the Canaries. Usually a move from Norwich to Villa would be seen as a step up for a manager but at the moment I’m not so sure it is. Lambert has build a good team in East Anglia and the morale seems far higher at Norwich than Villa right now.

Potential

Maybe Paul Lambert sees the potential that Villa hold and believes he can resurrect the clubs flagging fortunes. The Scot could see it as a challenge to get Villa back towards the top of the Premier League table.

Lambert strikes me as the kind of boss who would enjoy such a challenge. I just hope he is prepared for the mammoth size of his task.

Gamble

Appointing Paul Lambert as their new manager would be a great move for Aston Villa. However with his stock currently so high in the game at the moment I’m not so sure it would be a great move for Lambert.

The Scot is a good manager but if it doesn’t work out for him at Villa his reputation could take a terrible blow. I just hope for his sake and Villa’s sake that if he does take the job he is a resounding success.

Should Paul Lambert move to Aston Villa?

Villa to hold Lambert talks World Soccer Shop

Paul Lambert's representatives are to meet with Aston Villa on Thursday as the Norwich boss looks set to switch to their Premier League rivals.

Lambert: Aston Villa to hold talks

Lambert has emerged as the leading target for the Villa Park vacancy and Sky Sports revealed on Wednesday that the Midlands side were ready to make an official approach.

It is understood that the highly-regarded Scottish boss had a row with the Canaries board on Wednesday night, which could hasten his departure for Villa.

The Villans have been searching for a new manager following their decision to axe Alex McLeish earlier this month after just one unhappy season at the helm.

Lambert has earned plaudits throughout the game for his achievements with the Canaries as he guided the Carrow Road club to back-to-back promotions before enjoying an impressive first season in the Premier League.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Roberto Martinez were earlier in the frame for the Villa job, with the former Manchester United striker opting to stay with Molde, while Wigan's Martinez is due to remain at the DW Stadium despite also being linked with Liverpool.

Villa chairman Randy Lerner stated when McLeish was axed that he was looking to bring in a "new manager who sees the club's potential and embraces our collective expectations".

And it appears that Lambert fits the bill, despite the Canaries previously vowing they would fight to retain his services and the former Colchester, Wycombe and Livingston boss stating recently he was happy in his current post.

Gago hints at Boca Juniors return

Real Madrid midfielder Fernando Gago has expressed his desire to return to Boca Juniors in the summer transfer window.

The Argentine international joined Roma on a season-long loan from Real Madrid last summer with an option to buy, but the Giallorossi appear to be unwilling to make the transfer permanent.

A return to Santiago Bernabeu doesn’t look likely either, and the player is now actively searching for a new club.

Asked whether he would prefer to remain at Roma or return to Real Madrid, Gago gave a very interesting answer.

“Roma or Real Madrid? To tell the truth, I’d like to go back to wearing the Boca Juniors shirt alongside Riquelme!,” the midfielder told Fox Sport Radio.

Gago came through the youth ranks at Boca Juniors and went on to play 70 league games for the senior side before moving to Real Madrid in 2007.

The holding midfielder never quite managed to prove his worth at Santiago Bernabeu and could now return to Boca, a team that are on the road to make this season one of the most successful ever.

Pandev nearing permanent Napoli switch

Italian TV station Mediaset reports that Napoli have agreed to sign forward Goran Pandev on permanent basis.

The Macedonian striker arrived to San Paolo on loan from Inter last summer and he enjoyed a promising campaign with the Azzurri.

He seems to have done enough to persuade the Napoli chiefs to try and make his loan deal permanent and Mediaset reports the transfer is close to being completed.

According to the source, Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentiis and Inter owner Massimo Moratti have agreed an €8 million fee for the 28-year-old.

The Azzurri are already preparing for life without Ezequiel Lavezzi, who is set to leave San Paolo this summer, with youngster Lorenzo Insigne and Goran Pandev set to vie for a starting berth.

Goran Pandev has scored 6 goals and produced 5 assists in 30 Serie A games last term, but he could face a tough challenge from Insigne, who bagged 18 goals in 37 Serie B games while on loan at Pescara.

Bayern launch assault on Dzeko

Bayern Munich are weighing up a move for Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko, according to Bild.

The Bavarians were linked with Olivier Giroud, Luuk de Jong and Matias Suarez soon after they started the search for a new forward, but they eventually opted to sign Claudio Pizarro on a free transfer from Werder.

However, the German giants are looking to add another quality striker to the squad and Bild claims they have set their sights on Manchester City forward Edin Dzeko.

Bayern already have a world-class striker in Mario Gomez and the Bosnian is not the sort of player who is interested in playing second fiddle to anyone, but the German newspaper reveals that coach Jupp Heynckes plans to play the two forwards together.

The Bosnian is not entirely satisfied with his status at Manchester City, after falling behind Carlos Tevez, Mario Balotelli and Kun Aguero in the pecking order and he could jump at the opportunity to return to Bundesliga.

Dzeko currently earns around €7 million per campaign at Etihad and Bayern are prepared to offer him the same amount in order to lure him to Alianz Arena.

Bayern in no rush for Dzeko World Soccer Shop

Bayern Munich sporting director Christian Nerlinger claims the club feel under no pressure to press ahead with a proposed move for Edin Dzeko.

Dzeko: Continues to be heavily linked with Bayern

Reports have suggested that Bayern have made Manchester City striker Dzeko a top summer transfer target.

They are looking to bolster their firepower after seeing Ivica Olic leave as a free agent and are keen to bring in support for the prolific Mario Gomez.

Dzeko boasts a proven track record in the Bundesliga from his time at Wolfsburg and would have no problem slipping into the Bayern camp.

The Champions League finalists are in no rush to make an official approach to City, though, and have rubbished rumours claiming they have already agreed personal terms with the Bosnia international.

"We are in no hurry with regard to this," Nerlinger told BILD.

"We are under no pressure."

On the reports claiming Dzeko has already agreed to a move, Nerlinger added: "Those reports are just not true."

Martinez committed to Wigan

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan insists Roberto Martinez is committed to the club after he opted not to consider the Liverpool position.

The Spaniard had been linked with a switch to Anfield following Kenny Dalglish’s sacking, with Liverpool’s owners impressed after the 38-year-old guided Wigan to English Premier League safety for a second straight season.

Martinez rejected Liverpool due to a new management structure the club plans to implement, with Swansea manager Brendan Rodgers set to be named their new boss.

Despite the speculation surrounding Martinez in recent weeks, including over a potential switch to Aston Villa, Whelan is confident his manager is focused on Wigan.

“Roberto is staying with us and I’ve agreed to his request to up our spending on youth development and training facilities,” Whelan told ESPN.

“That’s going to be pretty costly as I have agreed to a full-sized indoor pitch – and that will cost 1.5million pounds.

“Roberto’s very keen on that aspect of the club. I have also agreed with him to bring in three or four new players.”

Martinez was the favourite to take over at Liverpool after meeting with the club’s owners last week.

According to Whelan, Martinez chose not to discuss the job any further after being unimpressed with the management structure.

“They set down their rules on how they saw the role and the way they wanted the team run and that was not the way Roberto would do it,” Whelan said.

“Roberto has his own way of doing things but they are American owners who have their own ideas of how it should be done.

“They are entitled to want to do it their way and Liverpool are a big club so I can see why Brendan Rodgers has opted to go there – and good luck to him, he’s a fine coach.”

Koscielny fears England 'disaster' World Soccer Shop

France defender Laurent Koscielny concedes losing their opening Euro 2012 game with England would be a 'disaster'.

Koscielny: Aware of the importance of England game

Koscielny is fully aware of the importance of the Group D clash with Roy Hodgson's men and he admits Les Bleus will be treating it like a final.

Arsenal centre-back Koscielny believes they cannot afford to lose their opening game and that facing England first in the group was the worst-case scenario for Laurent Blanc's troops.

"Our first match is like a final for us," Koscielny told the Daily Mirror. "To play against England is the worst possible draw but it will be an enormous chance for us to progress if we win.

"We can't afford to lose. Normally you might expect France and England to qualify for the second phase but football never works like that.

"We know this is like a final because defeat would be a disaster."

Koscielny admits he is relieved he does not have to face the suspended Wayne Rooney in the game against England.

"The absence of Rooney is a joy to us," added Koscielny. "He is a brilliant player, such a talent.

"But England have quality.

"It will be strange to play against Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. But Arsenal is one thing, France another.

"We've had a lot of jokes about playing against each other from being on the pitch together and in training at Arsenal.

"But while we laughed and joked, when the game comes it will be very serious and we must win the game. We all know that."

Van Bommel calls for Duch to lift

Mark van Bommel says the Netherlands must improve if they are to be successful at Euro 2012.

Bert van Marwijk’s team beat Slovakia 2-0 on Wednesday after previously losing warm-up friendlies against Bayern Munich and Bulgaria.

And veteran midfielder Van Bommel feels the squad are not yet at the level required to compete for the European Championship crown in Poland and the Ukraine.

“We are satisfied with the result, but our performance leaves room for improvement,” Van Bommel told SBS6 after the Slovakia win.

“We have to learn from the mistakes we made, because we can’t afford those kinds of errors at Euro 2012.

“I think we are heading in the right direction, though. We were much more threatening on the wings, and that’s also where the opener came from.”

Defender Wilfred Bouma and playmaker Wesley Sneijder both sustained injuries during the match in Rotterdam, and Van Bommel hopes the duo will be back shortly.

“We already had (Joris) Mathijsen’s injury, and now Wilfred and Wesley,” he said.

“Let’s hope it’s not too serious, because we need everybody this summer.”

The Netherlands begin their Euro 2012 campaign with the match against Denmark on June 9, before taking on Germany four days later and Portugal on June 17.

Brazil brush aside United States World Soccer Shop

The Brazilian Olympic team gave proof of their power as they thrashed the United States' senior side 4-1 in Washington on Wednesday.

Marcelo: Celebrates his goal

The Americans fielded their full side as they build up not to London 2012 but to their upcoming World Cup qualifying campaign, which begins in 10 days.

But a Neymar-inspired Brazil proved too good for their older hosts.

The 20-year-old Santos forward scored the first and made the second for Thiago Silva, before Herculez Gomez pulled one back on the stroke of half-time.

Marcelo and Alexandre Pato then scored in the second period as Mano Menezes' side made in 10 matches in a row without defeat.

Neymar opened the scoring from the spot in the 11th minute, after the referee gave a penalty when Leandro Damiao's shot hit Oguchi Onyewu's arm.

America tried to react and were close to pulling level from a free-kick by Gomez, but after that the South Americans created the better chances.

Damiao shot over the bar and Hulk missed another when he passed instead of going for goal himself.

In the 26th minute Neymar crossed for Thiago Silva, who displayed good movement to double the advantage with a header.

Brazil eased up and allowed the USA back in, Michael Bradley passing to Fabian Johnson, who crossed for Gomez to make it 2-1.

Brazil began the second period playing the fast-moving style Menezes favours.

Marcelo passed to Hulk, he found Neymar, and the youngster assisted Marcelo to make it 3-1 in the 52nd minute.

Ten substitutions and some tough tackles spoilt the rhythm of the match, but the Americans more than once went close to narrowing the gap again.

Defender Romulo saved one from Clint Dempsey after a nice move involving Johnson and Gomez, while keeper Rafael showed his credentials keeping out good shots by Gomez, Terrence Boyd and Onyewu.

Three minutes before the final whistle, though, substitute Pato completed the scoring with a powerful shot.

International friendly: Netherlands 2 Slovakia 0

The Netherlands avoided a second-straight defeat by beating Slovakia 2-0 in an international friendly in Rotterdam on Wednesday.

After a loss to Bulgaria in an international friendly over the weekend, Bert Van Marwijk’s men made no mistake in front of their home fans as an own goal from Kornel Salata and a strike from substitute Rafael Van der Vaart separated the teams.

Amid a raucous atmosphere at De Kuip, the hosts stormed into the lead after only eight minutes.

Ibrahim Afellay was the instigator, drilling a low centre across the face of goal that was inadvertently turned in by Salata.

The Netherlands could have added a second goal within minutes, but Robin van Persie fired off target after getting past Peter Pekarik.

Slovakia were handed a route back into the match just before the half-hour mark when Maarten Stekelenburg inexplicably elected to pick up a back pass from defender Gregory van der Wiel.

Miroslav Stoch lined up the set-piece from just outside the six-yard box, but could only blast harmlessly into the side-netting.

The Fenerbahce winger went even closer to an equaliser moments later, when his effort from a tight angle rebounded off the post, following a swift counter-attack led by Marek Hamsik.

Neither team seemed in any great hurry to force the issue coming out from the interval, with goalmouth action remaining elusive for much of the second half.

The hosts were handed a chance to break the monotony with just under 20 minutes to go, after Van der Vaart was felled on the edge of the area by Marek Cech.

The Tottenham midfielder stepped up to take the free-kick, but saw a wonderful effort smack back off the frame of the goal, with Jan Mucha completely beaten.

The Dutch went close again a few minutes later when Van der Wiel’s delivery flashed dangerously across goal, and somehow ended up in the arms of Mucha after a touch by Afellay.

They would eventually get their second courtesy of a combination between two substitutes.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar appeared to have been blocked off by a pair of Slovak defenders inside the area, but did just enough to tee up Van der Vaart for a straightforward drive into the far corner.

Van Marwijk’s side round off their Euro 2012 preparations with their final friendly match against Northern Ireland on Saturday at the Amsterdam Arena.

Torres sparks Spain, Holland scare World Soccer Shop

Fernando Torres scored on his return to the fold as Spain continued their preparations for Euro 2012 with a 4-1 win over South Korea in Bern.

Torres: Is congratulated after scoring the opener

The Chelsea forward opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a neatly flicked header from Benat Etxebarria's fine cross. However, a wonder strike from Kim Do-Heon brought the Koreans level two minutes before half-time.

Xabi Alonso quickly restored the World and European champions' lead after the break from the penalty spot after Choi Hyo-Jin handled Nacho Monreal's shot and Santi Cazorla's clever free-kick extended their advantage four minutes later.

Vicente del Bosque then made a raft of substitutions and two of the replacements combined for the fourth with 11 minutes remaining as Roberto Soldado's throughball was smashed home by Alvaro Negredo.

Holland suffered two injury scares ahead of Euro 2012 as Wilfred Bouma and Wesley Sneijder were forced off during a 2-0 home victory over Slovakia in Rotterdam.

PSV Eindhoven centre-back Bouma had to be substituted after a collision in the first minute when he and defensive colleague Johnny Heitinga clashed heads. Feyenoord's Ron Vlaar was Bouma's replacement, while Heitinga was comfortable enough to stay on the pitch.

Ibrahim Afellay helped to put Holland in front after seven minutes when the Barcelona forward, who returned to action only last month after a serious knee injury, produced a tricky run along the left and his low cross prompted Slovakia defender Kornel Salata to put the ball into his own goal.

Sneijder suffered an ankle knock in the 51st minute, with Holland boss Bert van Marwijk wanting to take no further risk with such a key player.

Rafael van der Vaart doubled Holland's lead after 75 minutes with a precise low right-footed shot from 15 yards across goalkeeper Jan Mucha and into the left corner.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored a fantastic opening goal and set up the second as Sweden held on for a 3-2 victory in their first Euro 2012 warm-up match against Iceland.

The AC Milan striker broke the deadlock in the second minute before teeing up Ola Toivonen 12 minutes later at the Gamla Ullevi in Gothenburg.

Kolbeinn Sigthorsson narrowed the deficit in the 27th minute and although Christian Wilhelmsson restored the two-goal advantage, Hallgrimur Jonasson's stoppage-time strike ensured a nervy finale.

Ibrahimovic helps Sweden to win World Soccer Shop

Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored a fantastic opening goal and set up the second as Sweden beat Iceland 3-2 in their first Euro 2012 warm-up match.

Ibrahimovic: Scored one, created another for Sweden

The AC Milan striker broke the deadlock in the second minute before teeing up Ola Toivonen 12 minutes later at the Gamla Ullevi in Gothenburg.

Kolbeinn Sigthorsson narrowed the deficit in the 27th minute and although Christian Wilhelmsson restored the two-goal advantage, Hallgrimur Jonasson's stoppage-time strike ensured a nervy finale.

Victory over former national team manager Lars Lagerback's men was Sweden's first of two warm-up matches before they begin their European Championship campaign against co-hosts Ukraine on June 11 in Kiev's Olympic Stadium.

They made a strong start this evening, Ibrahimovic firing them into an early lead with a stunning low volley from Sebastian Larsson's right-wing cross.

Ibrahimovic's cross from the left side of the penalty area then allowed fellow striker Toivonen a close range finish.

Sweden, who also play England and France in Group D, looked to be on their way to a convincing win but they were pegged back when Sigthorsson headed home Ari Freyr Skulason's cross from the left.

Wilhelmsson then volleyed past Iceland goalkeeper Hannes Thor Halldorsson with 13 minutes remaining as Sweden looked to have wrapped up victory.

But Iceland, who took a two-goal lead against France at the weekend before going down 3-2, refused to lie down.

Jonasson converted Johann Berg Gudmundsson's corner but the strike was too little, too late.

International friendly: Spain 4 South Korea 1

Spain continued their preparations for Euro 2012 with a comfortable 4-1 victory over South Korea at Stade de Suisse in Switzerland on Wednesday.

Spain got off to a good start, and nearly found the net just five minutes into the match when Santiago Cazorla’s blast at goal deflected off Fernando Torres, only for the ball to creep agonisingly by the post.

The early pressure from Vicente Del Bosque’s side paid off just five minutes later when Benat’s fizzed cross from the left-hand side was met by Torres inside the area, and the Chelsea man did well to nod the ball past South Korea goalkeeper Jin-Hyeon Kim.

Jin-Hyeon was a busy man in the opening 45 minutes and kept his side in the match with a couple of accomplished saves, denying both Cazorla and Xabi Alonso.

South Korea almost equalised in the 20th minute when Kim Jung-Woo skipped past a couple of challenges before lashing a shot inches past Jose Reina’s.

South Korea continued to probe for their opening goal and it eventually came a minute before half-time through a stunning Do-Heon Kim strike. The midfielder picked up the ball on the left hand side before smashing a fierce strike from 25 yards into the top corner.

Spain reclaimed the lead in the 53rd minute when Yong-Hyung Cho blocked a Nacho Monreal strike on goal with his hand inside the box. Xabi Alonso stepped up to coolly dispatch the penalty.

Del Bosque’s men kicked on after their second goal, and were able to add a third just three minutes later through a Cazorla free-kick. The Malaga playmaker showed outstanding initiative to fire a strike under the Korean wall from his set-piece on the edge of the box, giving Spain a two-goal lead.

The South Koreans kept up their spirits, however, and came close to grabbing a goal back when Ja-Cheol Koo went on a bursting run through the middle of the Spanish defence, only to smash his eventual shot on to the post.

Cerezo Osaka goalkeeper Jin-Hyeon continued to keep the score respectable with a number of brilliant saves in the second half, denying Sevilla striker Alvaro Negredo twice.

Negredo did eventually find a goal for Spain in the 78th minute when Roberto Soldado sent his compatriot through on goal and the substitute scored with a well-taken finish.

Spain’s final Euro 2012 warm up comes this weekend when they take on China in Seville before they head to Poland and Ukraine.

South Korea’s next encounter is also of large importance as they take on Qatar in World Cup 2014 qualifying.

In-form Barnetta to decide Bayern future

Bayer Leverkusen winger Tranquillo Barnetta will make a decision on his future this week, according to sporting director Rudi Voller.

The Switzerland international is in demand after a scintillating display in which he laid on a trio of assists for club team-mate Eren Derdiyok in the Swiss’ 5-3 friendly humiliation of Euro 2012 contenders Germany on Saturday.

And the attacker could leave on a free transfer in July when his contract expires, forcing Voller to come out and clarify the situation.

“To me, Barnetta was the man of the match (of Switerland’s victory over Germany) hands down. He’s one of our most valuable assets,” he told Sports Bild when quizzed on the topic.

“The door is open for him to stay. You can expect a decision this week.”

Barnetta has already turned down two contract offers from the club, and while he has declared his desire to stay, time is running out for the two parties to come to an agreement, given reported interest from the English Premier League.

The 27-year-old has spent eight years with the Bundesliga side, chalking up nearly 200 league appearances and earning over 50 caps for his national team.

Villa set for Lambert approach World Soccer Shop

Aston Villa have made Norwich manager Paul Lambert their number one target and are set to make an official approach in the next 24 hours.

Lambert: Villa's number one target

Lambert has emerged as favourite for the Villa Park post in recent days, despite his denial earlier this month that he had been contacted about any job.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Roberto Martinez have been amongst the names ruled out, but Lambert now looks to be the man that Villa chiefs have highlighted as their number one target.

Lambert has produced wonders at Carrow Road since taking charge in 2009, guiding them to successive promotions up to the Premier League.

And in their first season back in the top-flight, Norwich finished 12th - earning Lambert a huge amount of plaudits.

His progress with Norwich has not gone unnoticed and now Villa are ready to make their move.

Sahin can make Real impact

Real Madrid midfielder Nuri Sahin has indicated that he is determined to prove his credentials with the La Liga champions.

The Turkey international, who signed for Madrid last off-season for an undisclosed fee, struggled for fitness and form in his first season at the Santiago Bernabeu, making just 10 official appearances for the club.

A loan spell has been suggested as a possibility for Sahin, but the former Borussia Dortmund ace has guaranteed that he wants to prove himself with the Spanish title-holders.

“Unfortunately, this was not a very good season for me, because of the injuries that I sustained,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“But to have success at Real Madrid is not easy at all, especially in your first year. But I am convinced that next season will be my season.

“The physical problems blocked me, and this happened for several months, including in the pre-season. But I feel just fine now and I do not have any problem.

“I hope that I will win many titles with Madrid, who are a great club. Life has given me many good things, but my dream is to win the Champions League with this club.

“If I manage to do it, I will be the luckiest man in the world.”

Sahin has been a bit-part player under Jose Mourinho so far, but the Turkish midfielder had nothing but praise for the Portuguese coach.

“He is very demanding,” Sahin said.

“He demands the most out of every player, but we understand this.

“On the other hand, he has no problem to praise a player when they do what he asked for.”

Klinsmann: Brazil friendly a challenge

Jurgen Klinsmann wants the USA to embrace the challenge of playing Brazil, who he rates as ‘one of the best teams in the world’.

The USA thrashed Scotland 5-1 on Saturday but Klinsmann knows that Brazil are a different proposition for his side.

“We want to see where we are at now, against one of the best teams in the world,” the USA coach said.

“But as (goalkeeper) Tim (Howard) said, they love to dictate their own game, they are used to setting the tone and they have wonderful players, there’s no doubt about it.”

US veteran Landon Donovan scored a hat-trick against Scotland as his side completely dominated on Saturday.

The USA had 17 shots to Scotland’s three and now Klinsmann has set his side the challenge of taking the next step and being proactive against Brazil.

The former Germany international does not want to see his players just sit back and defend when the USA take on Brazil on Wednesday.

“Now the situation is interesting for us, how much can we take the game to them, how can we go eye-to-eye on the field in certain areas, in certain elements,” Klinsmann said.

“In terms of tempo, in terms of tactical approaches, in terms of closing them down and also play our game and go forward and cause them some trouble.”

United near to Kagawa swoop World Soccer Shop

Borussia Dortmund insist they are still to finalise a deal with Manchester United for Shinji Kagawa - though the switch should go through soon.

Kagawa: Closing on move away from Dortmund

It is widely reported that the two clubs are set to agree terms on a deal worth an initial £12million rising to £17million.

Kagawa himself is also yet to agree personal terms, but that looks unlikely to be a barrier to the 23-year-old Japanese midfielder sealing a move to Old Trafford.

The move is expected to be completed in the coming days, but Dortmund's sporting director Michael Zorc said: "There are some details still to be confirmed."

Kagawa, who has emerged a key figure for Dortmund in their recent successes, has just a year left on his current deal and he has already told the club he will not be extending his deal.

Anderlecht confirm Van Den Brom World Soccer Shop

Anderlecht have appointed John van den Brom as their new head coach on a three-year contract.

Van den Brom: New Anderlecht boss

Van den Brom leaves Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem to take up the post with the Belgian champions.

Vitesse said in a statement on their website they were "disappointed" that Van den Brom had opted to move to Belgium having been convinced last week that he would stay.

Former Holland and Ajax player Van den Brom, who won two caps for his country, is now 45 and succeeds Ariel Jacobs at Anderlecht. Jacobs resigned earlier this month after delivering the league title.

Anderlecht president Roger Vanden Stock said at a press conference, according to Anderlecht's official website: "I am very pleased that we have quickly found a new coach. We're going to work together for at least the next three years.

"I know that we have been in the habit here of seeing out long contracts, but we have confidence in the qualities of our coach. The future will show us if we are right."

Van den Brom said: "I am very happy to be here as coach, but especially proud that such a great club has thought of me.

"RSCA (Anderlecht) are synonymous with good and attractive football, with a style of play that I appreciate."

Anderlecht are targeting a place in the Champions League next season but begin in the penultimate qualifying round.

"Yes, we all know how important it is for the entire club to take part in this competition," Van den Brom said. "This is a wonderful challenge and we are going to do everything we can to get through these two qualifying rounds."

Carobbio points finger at Conte

The extent of Filippo Carobbio’s allegations against Juventus coach Antonio Conte has begun to circulate in the Italian media.

His deposition to investigators claims that the coach was aware of alleged match-fixing involving Siena’s president Massimo Mezzaroma.

The midfielder was detained by police last December as part of the ongoing Scommessopoli investigations into the match-fixing of several Serie A and B matches in 2010-11.

He claimed in his testimony that Mezzaroma sent a messenger down to the locker room to ask the players about the possibility of losing so he could win money on a bet, something the coaching staff, then including Conte, were aware of.

Siena and Conte have moved to officially deny such allegations.

However, Carobbio’s claims, given to investigators in Cremona, were damning of Mezzaroma.

“Before the Serie B match between Siena and Varese, president Mezzaroma sent someone close to him to the locker room to ask about the possibility of losing the game,” Carobbio said.

“That person then went on to say the president had wagered on our defeat.

“I later learned from our assistant coach that the coaching staff also knew of this arrangement made by Mezzaroma.”

Conte, who led Siena to promotion to Serie A that campaign, had his house searched by police as part of the investigations on Monday.

If Carobbio’s statements are proven, the coach could be charged with failing to report Mezzaroma’s misdeeds.

Afellay can be the Dutch Zidane

Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk said Ibrahim Afellay can fulfil an attacking role at Euro 2012, similar to French legend Zinedine Zidane.

The 26-year-old Afellay is regularly deployed on the wing by La Liga giants Barcelona but prefers to play more centrally, in behind the centre forward.

With Wesley Sneijder and Rafael van der Vaart also vying for the trequarista role in the Dutch side, Van Marwijk intends to employ Afellay on the wing, but with the licence to move infield at every opportunity.

“One of the best ever No.10s, Zidane, always played at Real Madrid coming in from the left,” the Netherlands boss told Algemeend Dagblad.

“In their hearts, they all want, ideally, to play as a 10 – the Van der Vaarts, the Sneijders and the Afellays.

“But if you play in the centre, you often have to play with your back to you opponent. He (Afellay) has shown that he is excellent in that role for the Oranje.

“But on the wing is different, and you can go either way. You can go inside or outside the opponent and give a pass. Afellay has to be convinced.”

Netherlands kick off their Euro 2012 campaign against Denmark on June 9 before then facing Germany and Portugal.

Blanc: Benzema, Giroud pairing viable

France coach Laurent Blanc said Karim Benzema and Olivier Giroud can play in the same XI, but they may not do so in their Euro 2012 opener.

Both players are coming off the back of hugely successful club campaigns, with Benzema having played an integral role in Real Madrid’s Liga triumph and Giroud having fired Montpellier to Ligue 1 glory.

Blanc has already intimated that Benzema will lead the Les Bleus attack at the Euros but has now admitted that he is toying with the idea of a front two for their opening clash with England on June 11.

“Benzema and Giroud can play together,” the former Bordeaux coach told reporters on Wednesday.

“They are two interesting players but they are complementary – I’m convinced of that.

“But there are choices to make, tactically in particular. It is necessary to think about the balance of the team.”

Blanc also admitted that he had been hoping to call upon the services of Yoann Gourcuff in Poland and Ukraine, but felt that he had no option but to drop the Lyon playmaker because of his fitness problems this season.

“Gourcuff had a big role to play. But he was injured,” he said.

When asked about how his side will line out for the meeting with old rivals England in Donetsk, Blanc replied: “I don’t know. But we will play to win.”

France play their final warm-up game on Thursday, against Serbia, and Blanc is expecting another tough test in light of their hard-earned victory over Iceland at the weekend.

“On paper, Serbia is better armed than Iceland. But it will be a different match,” he said.

“Whatever the opposition, we want to do what we set out to do. And without announcing the team, I say to you that there will be many changes.”

France and England and joined in Group D by tournament co-hosts Ukraine and Sweden.

Lippi praises Guangzhou players

Marcello Lippi praised his players after his club became the first Chinese side to reach the AFC Champions League quarter-finals since 2006.

Tournament debutants Guangzhou Evergrande progressed with a first-half goal from Brazilian striker Cleo.

“Our team played as we expected,” Lippi said.

“Our opponent was fast, they are not tall, but they have good technique, however we left little room for them to attack,” said World Cup-winning coach Lippi after just his third game in charge of Chinese Super League champions Guangzhou.

“We created many opportunities to score and played hard. Our opponent also created several attacking threats.

“The victory can be attributed to the excellent performance of each and every player. If our attackers had taken their chances, we would have scored more goals.”

Meanwhile, Ulsan coach Kim Ho-gon was delighted to maintain his country’s interest in the competition.

Ulsan ensured that Korea will be represented in the quarter-finals after edging out Kashiwa in a five-goal thriller at the Ulsan Munsu Stadium.

After a goalless first half, the Korean side took a deserved lead through a Kim Shin-wook header only for Leandro Domingues to equalise midway through the second half.

Ulsan regained the lead courtesy of an own goal from Naoya Kondo and extended their advantage through Lee Keun-ho before Junya Tanaka pulled back a goal for Kashiwa in stoppage time.

““It was difficult game but we are happy with this win as we are the only survivors among the four K-league teams taking part in this year’s competition,” he said.

“I have told my players many times that we are not only representing our club but that we are also representing Korea and the players recognise the importance of that.”

The draw for the quarter-finals will take place on June 14.

Report: Kaka met with Sao Paulo chief

Real Madrid midfielder Kaka reportedly met with Sao Paulo executive Marco Aurelio Cunha last week to discuss a potential return to Brazil.

The 30-year-old Brazilian has been beset by injury problems ever since he joined Real from AC Milan in 2009 and, despite an upturn in his form this season, he is expected to leave the Spanish capital this off-season, with Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain said to be leading the chase for his signature.

However, Sao Paulo have now apparently entered the fray, with AS revealing that Kaka dined with Cunha in the Brazilian city last Thursday.

The paper claims that the Campeonato Brasiliero club are confident of being able to meet the attacking midfielder’s wage demands with the support of some high-profile sponsors.

The major stumbling block would likely be the transfer fee, with Sao Paulo not in a position to match the 25 million euros PSG are reportedly willing to offer Madrid for the former Ballon d’Or winner.

Kaka has repeatedly stated he wants to remain at the Santiago Bernabeu and prove his worth to the club, but it is believed that he would consider returning home in order to boost his hopes of being included in Brazil’s 2014 World Cup squad.

Giroud looks to push claims World Soccer Shop

Olivier Giroud is optimistic his breakthrough season will continue apace as France face Serbia in their Euro 2012 warm-up match on Thursday.

Giroud: Brings 'something different'

Giroud shone at domestic level last season with his league-high 21 goals guiding Montpellier to their maiden Ligue 1 title, and the international scene has already had a taste of the 25-year-old's talents thanks to impressive performances in his first four outings for Les Bleus.

His first international goal arrived in a memorable 2-1 win over Germany in February, while in his latest international outing, against Iceland at the weekend, he came off the bench to set up two goals as Laurent Blanc's men battled back for a 3-2 victory.

Giroud should have done enough to earn a start against Serbia and he is confident he can offer the national side "something different" as Blanc seeks to finalise his plans ahead of France's Group D opener against England on June 11.

"I have increased my level of trust and showed my team-mates what my game is about," said Giroud, who made his debut in a friendly against the United States in November.

"My role is to provide something different. For me it is something new and special. I am very proud to wear the blue jersey, but I'm even more in official competition. That's a lot of pressure, but it's good pressure."

Asked whether Blanc would look to pair him up front alongside Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, Giroud said: "It is conceivable, but the Euros are imminent. A change of tactics, trying new things, it is not a given, but if I continue like this, I will have my chance.

"I am ambitious, but it's not me who selects the team."

After spending his earlier career at clubs such as Grenoble, Istres and Tours, Giroud came to greater prominence with 12 Ligue 1 goals for Montpellier as they finished 14th at the end of the 2010-11 season.

But it was his exploits during Montpellier's unexpected title challenge that cemented his reputation and forced Blanc to take a closer look.

"It happened pretty quickly," Giroud said of his elevation to the national team. "It proves that with self-sacrifice, labour and a hint of talent, it can be done."

Giroud was named among Blanc's final 23-man squad for Poland and Ukraine when the coach finalised his selection, with Lyon midfielder Yoann Gourcuff and Giroud's Montpellier team-mate Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa the men to miss out.

Those who survived the cut but did not start against Iceland on Sunday are pushing to stake their claim, with Laurent Koscielny and Gael Clichy poised to come in for Philippe Mexes and Patrice Evra in defence.

First-choice goalkeeper Hugo Lloris should return as France seek to extend their unbeaten run to 20 games under Blanc, while Yann M'Vila, Mathieu Valbuena and Florent Malouda are also likely to start.

Serbia, who have not qualified for Euro 2012, head into the match under a cloud after Fiorentina midfielder Adem Ljajic was dropped by coach Sinisa Mihajlovic not singing the national anthem prior to their 2-0 defeat to Spain on Saturday.

The Serbians also play Sweden next week as part of a three-match summer schedule that they are using as preparation ahead of the start of World Cup qualifying later this year.

Reina rues absent Villa

Spain goalkeeper Pepe Reina said David Villa’s unavailability for Euro 2012 is a major blow, claiming the striker is also a big off-field presence.

The country’s all-time record goalscorer Villa was forced to admit defeat last week in his battle to recover in time from the fractured tibia he suffered during the Club World Cup in December when representing Barcelona.

“I have wanted to give him a hug because I have not seen him recently,” Reina told Marca.

“But we talk every day and soon I will be able to give him a hug.

“The group will miss him, both as a player and a person. But we have no other option but to encourage him and hope that he returns as soon as possible.”

While Reina was unable to comfort Villa in person, he was on hand to support Roberto Soldado, who was excluded from Vicente del Bosque’s 23-man squad for Poland and Ukraine.

“We went to have a coke and I told him that in the future he will definitely have many opportunities with the national team,” he said.

“I know that for him and the other guys it was not easy to continue with us for these past four days (after the squad announcement), but they have to maintain their enthusiasm and keep fighting.”

Spain will open their campaign against Italy, whose preparations have been overshadowed by the enforced withdrawal of left-back Domencio Criscito due to his alleged involvement in a match-fixing scandal in Serie A.

Reina admitted he does know the full ins and outs of the story, but the controversy has taken him by surprise.

“We do not have much knowledge of what is happening but it is obviously not normal,” the Liverpool goalkeeper confessed.

“Photos have come out and it’s a surprise. We’ll see what happens but, of course, we are surprised.”

Defending champions Spain also have Republic of Ireland and Croatia for company in Euro 2012 Group C.

Abete rejects suspension calls World Soccer Shop

FIGC president Giancarlo Abete has rejected the idea that football in Italy should be suspended in a order to weed out match-fixing.

Abete: Suspending football 'not a solution'

Italy's Prime Minister Mario Monti said on Tuesday that professional football in the country could benefit from a break of "two to three years" after the latest developments in an ongoing match-fixing investigation hit the headlines earlier this week.

Nineteen people, among them Lazio captain Stefano Mauri, were arrested on Monday and many others are due to be questioned by prosecutors, but Abete does not feel the way to clean up football is to issue a blanket ban.

"I understand and share Monti's bitterness. It is the bitterness felt when values are lost," Abete said on his federation's website, figc.it. "In a delicate moment for a country, we need to avoid the risk of generalisation and demonising.

"I am in agreement that those that have done something wrong must pay, but to stop the leagues would mean to damage football.

"It would hinder those that are working in an honest way, which is the majority of our system as well as the loss of thousands of jobs. It's not a solution.

"The match-fixing and betting scandal is a very ugly chapter in our football.

"Several people have been accused of illegal acts that should be sanctioned at all levels should they be found guilty.

"However, Italian football is made of 1.4million registered members, of over 700,000 games a year, of thousands of honest professionals and in order to respect them, we must avoid the risk of generalising."

Italy captain Gianluigi Buffon has thrown his support behind Abete, insisting that the Prime Minister's comments should not be put into action.

Buffon was a member of the Juventus side that was stripped of two league titles and relegated to Serie B in 2006 in a match-fixing probe that found the Turin giants guilty of influencing referees.

"Monti is a capable person," Buffon said in a press conference in Italy's headquarters in Coverciano, Florence. "But I think the best answer has come from our federal president Abete."

Buffon added: "The players that earn a lot are only those that play for the top clubs and not the others. There are many players - the majority - that once their career is over they will have to find a job, reinvent themselves.

"But the question is whether you have certain values within you. I don't think I would have ever done those things even if I played in a smaller club because my family has taught me certain values.

"The situation in which our football is today has surprised me. I never thought it could go as far as it has. But if there was to be a break in football, 80 or 85% of the honest players would be penalised."

This week's operation was part of an investigation called "Last Bet", which is focused on 33 games played over the past two seasons, the majority of which were in Serie B.

Earlier this month, the FIGC released the names of 22 clubs along with 61 individuals that have been reported to the football authorities in connection with a match-fixing ring and betting investigation.

Dempsey maintains Europe dream

Fulham attacker Clint Dempsey has reiterated his desire to play Champions League football sometime in his playing career.

The American signed for Fulham in 2007 from MLS club New England Revolution and enjoyed his most prolific season to date in the 2011-12 season, scoring 23 goals in all competitions.

His blistering form has reportedly attracted interest from the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham ahead of the off-season transfer window.

Dempsey has one year remaining on his contract and, while speculation surrounding his future continues to circulate, the 29-year-old insisted that he will give his all for his club.

“What I do is focus on the teams that I play for and I give my heart to them, work as hard as I can to try to make the most of my time and make the most of the career that I have left,” he told reporters.

“The transfer window is open until August 31. It’s no secret that I would like to play Champions League one day in my career.

“If it’s meant to be, it will be.”

Dempsey is currently training with the USA squad ahead of Thursday’s friendly with Brazil, and national manager Jurgen Klinsmann has encouraged the forward to look for a bigger club.

“His goal is the right goal,” the coach said last week.

“If he has the opportunity to go a Champions League team, that’s the creme de la creme in the world of club soccer, then you’ve got to do that.”

Mancini rules out Ibra bid

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has ruled out a move for AC Milan forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic this summer.

The Italian led his side to a maiden Premier League title this term with a last-gasp victory over QPR on the final day of the season.

And City have since been strongly linked with a move for the Sweden international as they look to retain their crown next term.

However, the 47-year-old boss insists a forward line of Carlos Tevez, Sergio Aguero, Edin Dzeko and Mario Balotelli is strong enough.

“Ibrahimovic is a champion,” Mancini told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“But I already have four very strong strikers. I just need them to compete in the Champions League. We are okay up front.”

The 30-year-old striker scored 35 goals in 44 appearances for the Milan outfit last term, as they finished second in Serie A and reached the last eight of the Champions League.

He is set to captain Sweden at Euro 2012 this summer, who have been drawn in Group D alongside France, Ukraine and England.
